Reverend John E. Large

I was ordained to the priesthood on June 6th, 2015 by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. Saint Thomas More Parish is my first assignment as a priest in the diocese of Trenton. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH in 2004. During my time at the university I completed the pre-theologate program in preparation for entering major seminary. After graduation, I spent two years as a seminarian with the diocese of Trenton from 2004-2006. During these 2 years, I completed a pastoral year at Holy Angels Parish in Trenton and my 1st year of theology at Immaculate Conception seminary at Seton Hall University. I left formation in the summer of 2006 only to return in 2012 and complete my formation at the Theological College in Washington, DC. During my time away from seminary formation, I spent 4 years teaching; one year at Saint Rose High School in Belmar and 3 years at The LaSalle School at Saint Gabrielle’s in East Elmhurst, NY.

I was born on December 27, 1977 in Brooklyn, NY. In 1988, I moved with my family to Middletown, NJ. I am one of seven children, as I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers. As of right now, I have a total of 13 nephews and nieces. My parents and the majority of my family live in or near Middletown, NJ. My family is a great blessing in my life and I am happy to be so near to them in my first assignment here in Manalapan.

I am truly grateful to God for my priestly vocation! I have spent many years both discerning and being formed for the priesthood. It is a tremendous joy to look back on my life and see all the ways that God has worked in order to bring me into the vocation of the priesthood. As a priest, I hope to accomplish many great things and serve the Church faithfully. Saint John Paul II has been one of my greatest inspirations. His way of living out the priestly vocation is what I hope to emulate. In particular, his prayerfulness, orthodoxy, love for people, embrace of suffering, determination, and his Marian devotion are all characteristics that I hope to embody as I live out my priestly ministry.
